Historic Triumph: Nigeria's J’Tigers and J’Tigress Shine in FIBA African U-18 Quarter-finals

 In a remarkable achievement, Nigeria’s boys and girls basketball teams have both qualified for the quarter-finals of the ongoing African U18 Basketball Championship in South Africa. This milestone marks a historic moment for Nigerian basketball, as it is the first time that both teams have reached this stage in the tournament’s history. The quarter-finals slot was chosen by the girls as one of the top three teams from their group. J’Tigress is scheduled to play against Egypt on Wednesday in the match set for Pretoria. Their opening game against the Egyptians resulted in a loss for the Nigeria ladies, but they now have another opportunity. It is anticipated that the players will be in significantly better physical condition after being hit by flu right before their last group game against Uganda.

The opponents of J’Tigers had not been confirmed as of press time.

A former D’Tigers power forward and now a member of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Ugo Udezue is happy with the strides the teams have made.

He said, “It has been a roller coaster. Our players have passed through adversity and still going. We are extremely proud of our teams and officials.”

After being initially denied visas by the South African Embassy in Abuja, the boys finally arrived in Pretoria very late. They are participating in the competition with no financial assistance from the Ministry of Sports Development, relying instead on private donations. The FIBA U18 World Cup in Switzerland is set to feature two teams representing Africa.

The African U18 Basketball Championship serves as a qualification tournament for the FIBA Junior World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in Switzerland. The performance of the Nigerian teams thus far has been nothing short of impressive.
